A mainstay of the Aberdeen music scene for a number of years, Marionettes bring with them a perpetually happy-sounding brand of upbeat indie-pop, and their latest single, The Garden Song, certainly doesn’t disappoint.
The Garden Song is classic Marionettes fare: at just over two and a half minutes, it’s a chirpy nugget of guitar pop that nicely teases their as-yet-unnamed forthcoming debut album. Backed by a solid rhythm section, the track barrels along at a steady pace; the guitars are urgent and melodic, and frontman Paddy Buchanan’s vocals flit happily across the music. Without question, this is one of the band’s most accomplished recordings to date, thanks in part to their increasing skill as songwriters and also to Matt Morris’ superb production.
While past Marionettes releases have seemed a little restrained, not quite matching their live ferocity, The Garden Song sees that urgency captured on record and bodes well for the upcoming full-length.
The Garden Song by Marionettes is out on the 1st of July, and will be available as a free download.
