There are two types of bad band names: the ones that make you want to vomit and never listen to music ever again, and the ones that are intriguing enough to pique your interest. Sharkmuffin falls into the latter category, but it was still with some trepidation that I opened the email to be confronted with their new single Mermaid Sex Slave. Plus, the track title was so wonderfully awful that I just had to press play...
Man alive, this is a great song: at just under two and a half minutes, it’s a visceral, raw punch in the face of garage rock. The Brooklyn-based band create an infectious guitar groove through the song’s short running time that infuses itself in your very soul and just makes you want to grin ear to ear. The double-headed force of frontwomen Tarra Thiessen and Natalie Kirch is powerful and dominating, and makes for an exhilarating listen.
