Picture the scene: you've just stepped out of the Hercules Moments DeLorean and you find yourself in the 90s. MC Hammer pants and Walkmen are all the rage. Deciding to ignore the fashion of the day, you pick up a Walkman and head home to 2012...
Over the past few months, we've been getting in touch with bands, celebrities and more to ask them to create eight-song-long mixtapes for YOU. So crack out your Walkman and enjoy...
IndianRedLopez are a five-piece electronic pop band. With soft vocals, intense beats and an air of professionalism one would expect from a band who have previously released at least two albums, their debut album Empty Your Lungs and Breathe garnered them appreciation from much further afield than their hometown of Aberdeen. With approval from the likes of Rock Sound, The Skinny and The Toronto Star (?!) these guys are ones to watch out for.
Radiohead - Bloom (Live From The Basement version)
Radiohead are the benchmark for us really as they are always trying to progress, and are popular without having to compromise what they’re doing. This live version of the opening track of their last album takes the song somewhere else. Amazing.
This Mortal Coil - Sixteen Days/ Gathering Dust
This song is a synthesis of my (Danny) favourite music and was a surprise find at a carboot sale a couple of years ago. Dark,dreamy,Post-punk with Liz Fraser from Cocteau Twins on the vocals.
Jeff Buckley - Everybody Here Wants You
Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened To Me
One of my (Darren) favourite bands over the past few years and I’m finally getting to see them at All Tomorrow’s Parties next year. This song is one of their best and I love the outro.
Ryan Adams - Idiots Rule The World
There’s heaps I (Dave) could say but really it’s just the simplicity of the beat and vocal that I like. It’s hard to pick a favourite Ryan Adams song.
TOY - Lose My Way
It’s nothing new that you haven’t heard before but they’ve just written a great pop song! Simple, great sound and as with the rest of their album, you find yourself getting lost in it.
Bon Iver - Perth
The album already feels like a modern classic and it’s hard to choose one song as it works so well together. Kids should be given copies of it at school. It starts with this beautiful song which sets the tone of the album.
Song of Return - Anniversary
Craig and Alex worked with us on our first album and they’re good pals of ours. It was an honour as their music is amazing and this song would work well as the last song on a tape.[LISTEN]
